This artefact can be seen in a grave in Sakkara (Egypt). About 4500 years old, it constitutes the oldest testimony of goose cramming. Ducks and geese are used to eat a lot before their migration. They accumulate energy as fat, principally located under their skin and in their liver.

Egyptians reproduced this natural behaviour by cramming geese with figs. This is why in French, and in many other indo-european languages, liver and figs are related etymologically (in French foie et figues). During the XVI century, figs were replaced by maize, recently brought back from America by the conquistadors.
